Dental fears and phobias are a very real issue for millions of people around the world. At Atlanta Center for Dental Health in Alpharetta, GA, Dr. Bradley Hepler understands that visiting the dentist can lead to a great deal of anxiety for many patients, which is why he offers patients a new way of experiencing dental care – sedation dentistry.
What is sedation dentistry?
Sedation dentistry is a broad term that can encompass varying levels of sedation, but all forms of sedation dentistry focus on keeping patients comfortable and relaxed while they receive dental care. At The Atlanta Center for Dental Health, patients most commonly choose one of the following two types of sedation dentistry:
- Nitrous oxide or “laughing gas” – This colorless, odorless gas helps relieve anxiety and produces a feeling of calmness while you are undergoing dental procedures. It is simply inhaled through a sterile nasal mask and starts to work within moments. When your treatment is complete, we turn off the nitrous oxide and replace it with oxygen for a few minutes, and then you are free to drive yourself home afterwards.
- Oral conscious sedation – This is a deeper level of sedation that you take in the form of a pill. We prescribe the medication and tell you how far in advance of your appointment to take it, and then you have someone that you trust drive you to your dental appointment. The medicine will make you feel calm and relaxed. You will likely sleep through your appointment because you are so relaxed, but you will still be able to answer questions and follow directions as needed to complete your dental care. Many patients are so relaxed that don’t have any memory of the procedure after it is complete!
